Lemon - Set design The artistic vision for Lemon was to create a realistic, homey, fun and bright space with some little quirks for the audience to find. From a functioning menu chalk board, to edible food and drinks, we really wanted the audience to feel like they were in a living, breathing cafe. This design relied heavily on set dressing and a very strict colour pallet of black, white, yellow and small pops of green. I decided to use lines and shapes you would often find in sports wear as this trend is often seen on people dancing in this style. Holographic and foil fabric were used to add small lines of reflection and, in conjunction with the black mesh, layers of texture. I added this concept into my set design through the painted floor and wall treatment. The family home set piece was created from pallet wood and the asymmetrical geometric shape was developed as a response to the need of fluid floor space for the performers to use. I mapped out not only the performers movements with the director but where locations in and around the house would have been had the house stood there in real life. The work was a remount, however it was important to the choreographer to incorporate a local context. While creating my designs I employed my fabric colour choices to complement the limestone of both the film location, Fremantle Prison, and the performance venue, Quarry Amphitheatre. The work needed the design to amplify the removal individuality and persona. I added the grey hair and make-up aspect to the design to create a uniform look. The dance captured the divide between upper and lower class in an old, European style village, whilst having no specific plot. The female dancers were placed into two groups, one group representing the upper class, the other representing lower class villagers. The male dancers were all upper class characters. The colours and fabric were very important for this piece as the costumes needed to have specific movement for each group of dancers. For the upper class costumes, the fabrics I chose all had to be dyed so the blues matched for the male and female costumes. The fabrics needed to enable the costumes to have a floating effect when the dancers moved. The characters have wildly different personalities which the costumes needed to portray, along with little detailed elements to show what role they played in the theatre group. The budget restrictions presented challenges in acquiring new or designing/sewing custom pieces. As the play revolves around a community theatre group, our concept was for a cluttered and put together aesthetic. Besides the obvious change in silhouettes of the clothing, I also used a contrasting colour pallet to show the change - keeping the colours of the Victorian era costumes almost monochromatic whilst bringing in brighter colours and a higher level of contrast in the costumes of the 1970s. The set needed to symbolise multiple locations and flow between the Victorian era Act 1 and 1970s of Act 2. The audience was placed on two joining edges of the square playing space. I decided to outline the playing space using a thick, solid white line up to the edge of my set piece. The performers made all their entrances and exits through the gap created by the set piece. This piece was used to represent both the house in Act 1 and the park pavilion in Act 2 with removable window frames and a park bench that came on at the start of Act 2. This work was an exploration of humans going about their work, and also about ballet works in general. The idea of using light bars to represent humans making connection with each other also influenced the costumes, as I chose to keep the costumes all white so the lights would reflect colour onto the dancers and it would grow in intensity as more dancers came together. The shape of the costumes hinted at traditional office wear - the shape of a jacket lapel, the structured quality of suit pants. The piece was created in the studio with the dancers and therefore the design process was fluid and experimental. The colours of the costumes were inspired by Flourite - a semi precious stone with iridescent qualities, an element that was important to the choreographers. I designed hooded jackets made from transparent PVC vinyl which were used to represent the dancers “energetic aura”, creating a sort of energetic shell that the dancers passed around to each other. The fabric choice for the jackets was very important to the choreographers and the PVC was eventually chosen after many tests as it held a structured shape and was transparent and able to be “looked through” by the dancers. The design idea came from a junkyard or tip being the ultimate image of waste, excess and want over need. We decided to have only set pieces move on the spot with nothing going on and off stage so the space could be filled with junk and the characters could journey through the space with different sections having specific requirements. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e327fd36574e34694babe65/1588585199056-X5ZNX5TWLBAIGSBKZPUW/IMG_2893.jpg Portfolio - Hansel and Gretel - Set design This set consisted of many detailed elements and moving parts including 8 large light boxes, five spinning “carwash” poles, a catwalk platform made up of a mishmash of shapes, steps and slopes, a trap door in the platform and a BBQ that could have a person pushed into, fridges with TVs and LED light strips inside to light up coloured bottles, multiple working lamps on stage and an animatronic bird. This put to test all of my design, set dressing, technical and communication skills. It was a very hands on process as I was involved with individually picking junk items off verge collections, from junkyards and from the tip.
